After a bit of Google search, I came across this forum which recommends restarting the Mac to safe mode and doing all kind of geeky stuff. Now, I usually like troubleshooting software problem but not today. I had a deadline. After hours of Google search, I came across this answer on Apple forum by the user Linc Davis and surprising it worked. Excel and Powerpoint also have the not responding problems, less frequently than that occurs in Word tho. Screenshots are attached below, and my Mac version is Mojave 10.14. Frankly, the problem has been a while since High Sierra, but less frequently, it seems more often as I keep using it. The settings on my other Mac are exactly the same but it won't connect for incoming mail. The only differences I spotted were.on the mac that has the working mail, High Sierra is version 10.13.1 and mail is version 11.1, and on the mac where mail isn't working, High Sierra is 10.13.2 and Mail is 11.2. Still not working.

Max OS X 10.6.8. Re: Spotify won't open - 'application not responding'. Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection before checking for updates. Install Mac OS X updates followed by Office updates. Install Mac OS X updates first: To get Mac OS updates, go to the App store on your dock, and then click the Updates button to reveal available updates. Then Install Office Updates. Hi there, jozols!
Thanks for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities. From the information in your post, I understand you are having trouble using the Mac App Store to update your apps. I know it's important to get the latest versions of all your software installed, and would be happy to help!
Quitting and relaunching the App Store and restarting your Mac are both great steps to try, and I'm happy to see you've already done both. Since you're still having trouble, I would recommend the following steps to further troubleshoot.
First, try quitting the Mac App Store and relaunching again, this time while holding the Shift key on the left-hand side of your keyboard. Then, try to update your apps.
Should the apps still not update, the next step is starting your computer in safe mode, and seeing if you're able to update there. The following article will provide you with more information on safe mode, as well as with instructions on booting to it.
If you're still having trouble updating after testing in safe mode, the next thing I can recommend is trying in a new user account. The article linked below will explain why testing in another user account can be helpful, and walk you through creating a new account.
Cheers!

Part 1: Why So Many Apps No Longer Working on macOS Catalina

One thing for certain is that, if the app you have trouble with is built with 32-bit structure, then you should give it up for good. When macOS Mojave was announced, Apple warned that it would be the last version of macOS that would support older 32-bit apps. Apple has been purging 32-bit apps for the last 10 years and is now ready to take the final step, even if Mac users may not be ready to lose access to older apps (App Can't Be Opened Because Apple Cannot Check It for Malicious Software.).
Compared to 32-bit apps, 64-bit apps can use memory more efficiently so as to offer faster system performance in macOS. The technologies used in macOS Catalina like Metal only work with 64-bit apps. That's why Apple has completely wipe out 32-bit applications in its latest macOS (What Is Other On Mac Storage). In the simplest terms, Apple wants to get rid of outdated apps to make sure everything is properly optimized and isn't an unnecessary drain on system resources (How To Uninstall Programs on Mac).
